I have been meaning to post this for some time now.

A couple of months back, George Von Brandt passed away. Some of you may have known him, as he owned VB rock and Gems in Oregon City, and later in Milwaukie. George was a good friend of mine for many years (over 20), and he taught me to cut stones. The VonBrandts were the largest opal dealers on the west coast for quite some time.
George's father was an opal importer down in Napa CA, and George cut his first one in 1939. I feel blessed to have been taught by him.
We wore out the wheels on my Genie, and his too, as there was always someone making cabs up in the shop.
George composed beautiful jewelry as well, and sadly I did not have time to apprentice with him for that. I did pick up some of it, but probably just enough to get myself in and out of trouble.

An ornery, but kind and generous man will be missed by me and many others.

It is great that you got to know him Will, and for so many years ..You will think of him often, and fondly.

So you know about cutting opals then? I got some a few years ago, and I don't know what
to do with them, maybe you can help me on this.
Anyway, I am sorry about the loss of your friend, and a good rock man to boot. :)
